Arthur Max Mebert died May 7th, 2017, with his daughter Ann Marie by his side. He was born April 23, 1924 to Joseph and Mollie (Fink) Mebert in the Bronx, NY. Art graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, where he lettered in baseball and football. He had a scholarship to Dartmouth College, but went into the army and WWII instead. He was at Normandy on D-Day +3 and wouldn't talk about his experience there until very recently. After the war he joined the New York City Police Department. Playing on a softball team in NY, he broke his ankle. While recuperating he had the good fortune to meet a lovely young and very short nurse, Doris LaRue Dideum at the VA hospital. Everyone said they should get together, so they did and got married 6 months later. They had three children, Ann Marie, Carolyn, and Ken and lived for 55 years in Whitestone, Queens, NY. During his career, among other experiences, Art suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a vehicle in the line of duty, shot the last person to be executed in NY, was promoted to Detective, worked homicide in Brooklyn and was awarded the NYPD Medal of Valor. He retired from the NYPD in 1967 and went on to work for Empire Mutual Insurance, Bankers Trust and Merrill Lynch. He was an Elder, Deacon and Trustee at First Presbyterian Church of Flushing, N.Y. He joined Jamestown Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, VA after relocating to be close to daughter, Ann Marie, due to Doris' debilitating dementia. Art developed a strong affiliation with Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, the organization that helped him through Doris' final days. He also volunteered at the Williamsburg Regional Library and Faith in Action. He is predeceased by wife of 62 years, Doris, and a great granddaughter, Makenzie Lee Mebert.

He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, leaving his children Ann Marie (Bruno Nervo), Kenneth (Rebecca) and Carolyn (Arnie Taylor), grandchildren Joseph Burzynski (Carrie Ann James), Mark Mebert (Kim Morgan) and Mollie Meikle, his great grandchildren Matthew Mebert and Zachary Mebert.

A visitation will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 4-7:00 PM with a service following at 7:00 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg, VA. Burial will be in A. G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran's Cemetery, Suffolk, VA on Monday, May 15th at 12:00 Noon.
The family would like to express their thanks to Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg and the nurses and staff at Sentara Hospice and Home Care.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Art's memory to Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg, Faith in Action, or the Williamsburg Regional Library. Condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
