Toshiko Tanaka Golden, 90, passed away peacefully at home, with her loved ones by her side on Sunday, May 14, 2017. She was lovingly called "Mema" by her family and their friends. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her. She was one of nine children born to Futado and Masa Tanaka. She was born and raised in Kiryu, Japan. Mema studied very hard to earn high grades in school. She attended one year of dietician schooling and then worked for the Japanese military. Mema married an American soldier, "Goldie" and they had three children, Barbara Ann, Bobby, and Jeanne. Most of her life was spent in the U.S. Mema faced many challenges - learning how to live in a new culture and different type of society, being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1983, living without her spouse of 50+ years, and becoming more dependent upon her family for everything. Mema was strong-willed, outspoken, feisty, and funny. She was tough and strong even though she looked small and weak. She lived in Hampton for over 30 years, with the last four as a widow. In 2012, she moved to Chesapeake to live with Jeanne, Donald, Sarah, Teddy, Hannah and Benji when her memory began to decline.

Mema loved her family! She encouraged her children and grandchildren to get a good education. One of Mema's pleasures in life was flower gardening and she loved to be surrounded by flowers. She enjoyed being outdoors, swimming, going to the beach, sewing, crocheting, and traveling with Pop Pop when visiting family in the US, in Germany, and in Japan. She also loved to shop for pretty things. She loved to see Christmas light decorations and loved donuts and chocolate. Mema had fun playing BINGO and the board game "Trouble" but really loved to win! Mema loved her little black, barking dog, Peppy who was Pop Pop's dog but became her faithful companion after he passed in 2008. Mema's greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mema was preceded in rest by her parents, her siblings, and her husband, Robert Vance Golden. She is survived by her children, Barbara Ryder and husband Michael, Robert "Bobby" Golden and wife Barbara, Jeanne Walton and husband Donald; grandchildren, Jeanne Edwards and husband Mickey, Michael Williamson and husband Jason, Donald "Donny" Culver Jr. and wife Nicole, Mercedes Mace and fiancée Phillip Zacharias, Michael Ryder Jr., Kimberly Ryder, Moriah Ryder, Sarah Walton, Teddy Walton, and Hannah Walton; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Draper, Anna Edwards, Hayden Williamson, Cullie Williamson, Millie Williamson, Donald "Trey" Culver III, Landon Culver, Josephina Ryder, and Rosemary Zacharias; parents of sons-in-law, Katie Ryder and Albert and Kathryn Walton; former son-in-law, Donald Culver and wife Robin; several relatives in Japan, and special friends, the Fenns and the Morabitos.
